Scholarly Commentary

In his notes to his 1911 edition of DGR's works, WMR observed that DGR sometimes used his brother's position as art critic for The Critic to “express some opinion of his own, which was inserted into an article of mine” (1911 edition of DGR's works). This extensive first part of the article in the 1 December 1850 publication was DGR's work. Its edged remarks on the current institutional situation of British art and artists inevitably recall the similar attitude taken by the hero of DGR's tale St. Agnes of Intercession, which DGR was writing at the same time.

Printing History

First published in the 1 December 1850 issue of The Critic, and later collected by WMR in his 1911 edition.
