“Table of Poets” in
Early Italian Poets vol. 1,
The translation must have appealed to DGR because its subject matter, and especially its
tone and attitude, reflect DGR's mordant judgments on his own world and time. See for example
“The World's Doing” and
“On Refusal of Aid Between
Nations”. DGR's source is the text in
del Primo Secolo (I. 124).
As with most of DGR's translations, this one cannot be exactly fixed.
It is probably a fairly early work, however—done in the late 1840s.
The translation was first published in 1861 in
Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in
and his Circle.
