Scholarly Commentary

The subject of the poem is Jane Morris, and the title refers to the poet's “homage” through painting, poetry, and love. Originally intended for “The House of Life”, DGR left this sonnet unpublished, perhaps because he felt its point of view had been better made in a sonnet like “The Portrait”.

Textual History: Composition

The poem was written in 1868, and probably belongs to late April or May, when DGR and Jane were in the thrilled onset of their passion for each other. Two manuscripts descend to us: a heavily corrected holograph at Duke, and a fair copy in the Ashley Library.

Printing History

Not published in DGR's lifetime, it was first printed by Wise in his Ashley Catalogue (IX. 116 with facsimile). The Duke manuscript was then published by Baum in his Analytical List of Manuscripts in the Duke University Library, 66 ).
