Dante Gabriel Rossetti. A Record and a Study

William Sharp

General Description

Date: 1882
Genre: critical study

Scholarly Commentary

Along with Hall Caine's biographical study of DGR and his work Recollections of Dante Gabriel Rossetti , also published in 1882, this is the earliest critical investigation of DGR and his work. Its critical views remain valuable not only in themselves, but because of Sharp's close acquaintance with DGR.

As a critic, William Sharp (1855-1905) wrote under his own name. But beginning with a book of verse he published in 1893, he wrote a series of imaginative works in verse and prose under the pseudonym “Fiona Macleod”. These writings are prominent examples of the literature of the Celtic Revival.
