Scholarly Commentary

Landseer was known as the Queen's favorite painter and exemplifies the mid-Victorian attraction to glossy images of domestic bliss. This particular work exposes the tension inherent in Victoria's role as Queen, and the conventional duties of wife and mother in nineteenth-century Britain.
