Scholarly Commentary

This is perhaps the earliest portrait that DGR made of his sister, although four other portraits done between 1846 and 1848 exist, including an oil done in 1848. Her delicate beauty is evident in all of these pictures, though the pencil profile sketch may be the most charming.

The onset of Graves disease in 1871 altered her appearance dramatically, as can be seen in the late portraits DGR made—all done in coloured chalks in 1877. See the frontal portrait, the affecting melancholy picture with her head slightly bent, and the double portrait of her and her mother.
