Surtees comments: “In two compartments. In the left, Miss Siddal unaware of the all-seeing eye of Providence
. . .is hiding one of her own drawings which she evidently does not wish Rossetti to see. In the right
compartment, Rossetti surrounded by a litter of unpaid bills finds the drawing concealed behind the canvases
stacked against a wall”.
