Scholarly Commentary

This drawing is one of the comical “Elephant Sketches” DGR made for Fanny Cornforth. For further commentary see editorial notes on Money to the House. DGR sent this drawing in a letter to Fanny of 18 May 1874 in which he playfully, but seriously, asked her to find one of his Chinese porcelain pots because “I want it badly for my picture. You shall have it back quite safe when done with which will be before long” (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 74. 96 ). The picture is the Ecce Ancilla Domini! which DGR was reworking in 1874 for William Graham (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 74. 100 ).
