Earl Warenne

Dante Gabriel Rossetti

General Description

Date: 1840 November

Scholarly Commentary

This untraced early drawing is remarked by WMR as having been executed in November 1840. It represented William, Count de Warenne of Normandy “dictating, it would seem, the signing of the Magna Charta” in 1215 (see WMR, Family Letters, I. 87.). For his service in the battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror rewarded him with extensive land in Norfolk and created him the first Earl of Surrey.
