Scholarly Commentary

This drawing belongs to the series of “Elephant Sketches” that DGR sent in letters to Fanny Cornforth, whom he nicknamed “Fan”. DGR nicknamed himself “Rhinoceros”. Rowland Elzea points out that this and the related sketch Economies Éléphantines “refer to the ‘Elephant's Hole’ where Fanny kept the money Rossetti sent her which she was able to save” ( The Samuel and Mary R. Bancroft Jr. and Related Pre–Raphaelite Collections, 122 ). The other drawings in the series are Chines Elephant, Elephant Swimming, Elelphant Tree, and Elephant Burying Jar.
