Scholarly Commentary

This “subject for a burlesque drawing” (unexecuted) was entered into a notebook kept by DGR in the 1860s, now in the library of Duke University. If completed, it would have depicted Hymen standing sentry before a door of marriage, and preventing Cupid “from peeping at a keyhole.”
