This subject for an unexecuted picture is an entry in a small notebook, now in the British Library. The unearthing in 1506 of the ancient Greek statue of the the Laocoön group, and Michelangelo's reaction to the event, is one of the foundational events of Renaissance art history. Current scholarship is questioning whether the statue
is a Michelangelo forgery.
