Scholarly Commentary

The review is by WMR, who contributed three more to The Germ, one in each number. In his comment on the review in the 1901 reprint Introduction WMR observed that the “cultus of Robert Browning...commenced by Dante Rossetti, had permeated the whole of the Preraphaelite Brotherhood, and formed not less than some other ideas, a bond of union among them” (page 27).

Textual History: Composition

WMR did not finish reading Browning's poem until 8 April so the review would have been written sometime during the next few weeks (see Fredeman, The P.R.B. Journal, 68-69 ). The fourth and last number of the periodical was published on 2 May.
